AS3 Animation System v2.0

Nestable Button Example

Here was my situation. I wanted to create a flash menu where if you clicked a button, it would bring you to a link, or if you clicked an arrow, it would collapse or expand its sub-menu. I ran into several problems in doing this. Creating a mockup was easy. I used MovieClips as Menu nodes and everything was fine. Until I tried to make those menu nodes change states on mouse over, up, and down. So first I tried changing the MovieClips to class SimpleButton. Well, this didn't work because you can't have nested buttons. So I made my menu not use nesting, and instead it was a flat tree. This was perfect until I added in animations. Animations got very troublesome because I wanted the ability for child menu nodes to collapse at the same time as their parents (which would be easy if we were using nested buttons). So back to square one. Let's try nesting again but with MovieClips acting like buttons. Using an invisible button I controlled the timeline to different labels. This was a problem because whenever the timeline moves to a new keyframe, properties on the objects in that layer would all get reset. I could rant about that behavior, but instead I'll focus on the solution.

Basically, I made a replacement to SimpleButton. It works pretty much the same way SimpleButton does, but it has two improvements. You can have nested buttons, and it has a disabled state (controlled by the enabled property).
